Natural Disasters - Blizzards

WALT: Research about other natural disasters for a better understanding.

Yesterday I blogged and researched about Typhoons and got a really good understanding about them (Typhoons) now I will be researching about Blizzards and how they occur/happen and what they are and so much more questions and things like that.

What is a blizzard?
A blizzard is actually a very windy snowstorm where it snows for a very very long time and where winds are very strong so it is a very severe (bad) snowstorm. How do they happen? Blizzards are caused by warm air rising over cold air from the equator which is the line in the center/middle of the Earth.

But what's the actual way of a Blizzard forming?
Well it is just as I said formed from warm air rising over cold air from the equator causing it to bind or be brought together and something called a front happens precipitation (rain, snow, hail, sleet).

Are Blizzards being caused by humans?
It is a natural disaster because snow and wind is not man or human made at all and that is why a blizzard is a natural disaster and the things humans are doing aren't participating in this natural disaster so therefore human actions aren't cause or affecting this natural disaster.

Natural Disasters - Typhoon

WALT : research about natural disasters.

In this last block we will be researching about natural disasters which is actually our new term inquiry topic and we have a number of questions to answer, the natural disaster I will be researching is a Typhoon because I personally think it's unique.

Have you ever wondered what a Typhoon is? Well let me tell you, a typhoon is actually a tropical storm that usually happens around the Indian and Pacific ocean, it is actually very similar to a hurricane and a tropical cyclone.
But is that the only place where Typhoons hit? Well Typhoons can actually happen a lot less in certain areas and countries in the world but they are also very common here is a list of some common places that get hit by Typhoons.
Most Typhoons hit around Indian ocean, western Pacific ocean, east of Asia so close to places like Japan. Typhoons are formed from warm air which usually comes from warm water but that is actually why you don't see or hear about many Typhoons because they rarely happen. The spinning rate for a Typhoon is up to 75 - 150 mph (mile per hour) but a strong/super Typhoon can go 150+ mph (miles per hour).

How do people get affected by Typhoons? Why?
A lot of people usually get hurt and affected by Typhoons because they are really strong so people do get injured and hurt some unfortunately do sadly lose their lives, people lose their homes making them homeless, cars and a lot of other things. This happens because the wind from a Typhoon is just to strong for peoples items and people in general. So this affects a lot of people when they happen but they are quite rare because you did need a lot of warm water and a lot of strong air to cause a Typhoon?

Is Typhoon the most dangerous natural disaster?
It is actually a very dangerous storm because its not a very light storm and things like that but it is also not the most dangerous and im very happy that I have not experienced one before but I hope for all those that have that they are ok and safe. The reason why Typhoons aren't the most dangerous natural disaster because there are much much worse ones but they also can be depending on the spread the wind is blowing.

Maths Reflection

WALT: using class equipment and materials to improve on our basic facts and etc.

This afternoon we have been doing our normal Maths lesson, in this Maths lesson we got to play a wide variety of different Maths games most of them using games.

The game we played involved your normal house playing cards, what we did was took out all the face cards or royal cards (Jack, Queen and King)  and left all the numbered cards. After sorting out all the cards we started to play our game the game we played can be used with addition, multiplication, division.
To play this you need numbered cards or paper.
You need at least 2 people or more.
Paper and pencil if you need it to work out any problem (optional)
What you want to do first is make sure your players know what they are doing and then you pick the Maths you would like to do so say you want to do addition and then make sure your players know that they are doing addition, next you flip over 2 or more cards and they have to add it up until someone gets the answer. The person with the most cards win.

Something I really enjoyed was that you had to think really fast and say the answer extremely fast otherwise you would lose and sometimes people would say words and not numbers or they got confused and said something else and I thought that this was really funny and I also found playing with my friends was really really fun and enjoyed as well.
Something I found challenging this afternoon is that you have to really fast and one of my friends that I versed is extremely good at her times tables so I had to be extra fast and make sure I got the correct answer otherwise I would lose, but in the end I still won.

So I would like to improve on some of my multiplication and my divisions and things like that because I think I should work on them a lot more because I feel like I should know all of them by know, so that means my next steps will to start practicing a lot more at home and make sure im  really practicing and get someone at home to test me on my multiplication.

Do you have any Maths goals?

Maths Test Reflection

IALT: write a reflection about our Maths lesson.

Today Room 9 and 10 did a test to see our understanding of Maths, the test we did had many many problems in it and there were a lot of questions that had me stop and think.

Something I did really enjoy about doing this test is that it really does make you think and double check your answers especially because I personally want to make sure I got the answer correct and things like that. Something I didn't enjoy and found challenging about this test is that most of the questions were asking us about things I haven't learned about and things that I had no idea how to figure them out.
Another thing I found challenging was that at certain questions I had to really think about them because I just had to double and triple check everything was right and doing this was time consuming but I luckily got the test done.

My next steps for a maths test will be probably trying to make sure that I know and feel confident with my answers even though I checked it because I found that even though I might have checked it 5 times I still wasn't confident but I think it is and was because I didn't know how to solve out some of them correctly so I tried to solve it however, but next time I think I should try feel more confident with my answer and if I dont then I think I should change it next time.

The thing I would like to improve on next time is also learning how to do some of these problems because I think it will be better to learn them and things like that so next time I have a question like that or a problem like that I know a good way to solve them instead of just guessing and trying to figure it out with a strategy that isn't meant for that question and problem.

Did you know that people were tested on their maths and they all said they were good at maths but scientist say only 33 percent actually were?

Do you think your good at maths?

Can you figure out at least one of those questions down below?

My First Blog Reflection For Term 3 2018

It is officially the beginning of term 3, as most of yous know it was actually school holidays and if you don't know what a school holiday is then let me tell you.

A school holiday is a 2 week break from school so students and teachers can relax and have a small break away from school. In these holidays many people spend time with family and friends, others might go overseas for a small period/amount of time, that is what this blog post will be about and things like that but instead it will be about how my school holidays were, how I felt and some of my goals for this term.

Image result for school holidays
My school holidays were pretty normal we didn't get to do much because most of my family were busy because it was in the middle of the year but I still got to spend a good amount of time with everyone.
Something that I really found enjoying and found fun about the school holidays was when I went south of Auckland (Otara, Papakura, Drury) with my two sisters and my niece and nephew but for me personally I thought my sister was driving very slow so it took a long time to see my Aunty and Cousins but then they are my favorite Aunty and Cousin so I waited.

We went out there a bit late around 5pm - 6pm at night and we had dinner there, we had KFC and lots of chocolate and I was very happy but it did slowly start to get later and later so we had left them and we started to drive home, it was about 8pm - 9pm at night and as we pulled into my sisters drive way we all realized we didn't want to go home just yet so we went out for another drive.
This time we went out to the beach and we sat in the car watching the waves and by this point my niece and nephew were sleeping and I actually don't know what beach we went to because I had fallen asleep on the way there but my sister jumped out to go throw something in the bin so me and my other sister played with the sand and dipped my our feet in the icy cold water and that was the things enjoyed in the holidays.

Something I really can't wait for this term is that we are going to be going to the museum a lot this term and I haven't been to the museum in a very very long time and I can't wait to explore the new things they have in there and see if they have changed anything or added anything new into the museum, another thing i'm really excited for is our new inquiry topic which is actually natural disasters so things like earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes etc, because I don't think I have really learned about natural disasters and I never really thought that I would think that natural disasters sounded interesting and that I would want to learn about them.

Something I want to improve on throughout this whole term is probably writing, reading and maths because I think I can do a much better standard then what I am and what I was currently doing, I would also like to somewhat improve on my confidence because I am still a very shy person.

So what did you guys do on the school holidays? What was your favourite thing you did?

Inquiry Invetigation learning reflection

Inquiry Investigation -
So far throughout the inquiry we have just been starting to get our projects started and things like that, for my group we have all chosen to do a Cardboard display because its something that is really easy, fast, simple and usually really eye catching and things like that.

We have currently finished everything and we have actually thrown it out because myself and my group didn't feel like keeping and things like that so we just threw it out, the main thing I will be taking from doing this is a better understanding of what black holes are and what they do and things like that,
I will also be taking away learning from other peoples displays and what they have done and it was really fun to see everyones topic and everything they did and I really think that people that did all there projects and finished them should get appreciated a lot more because some of them finished it in about 1 hour and things like that.

Planets around the Sun and Earth (Solar system) learning reflection

Planets around the Sun and Earth -
As you know the solar system (sun system) has many different ways of affecting the Earth, there are 8 planets including our wonderful planet Earth these planets are, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Earth, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The reason I didn't say solar system is because this isn't really all about the whole solar system its more about a few planets around the solar system.
Mars -
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and it is also known as the red planet and its actually named after a Roman god, this Roman god was the god of war.
Jupiter -
Jupiter is actually the fifth planet away from the sun, which is just behind Mars, Jupiter is actually a gas giant and it is also the biggest planet out of all the planets in the solar system.
Terrestrial planets -
 Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.
Jovian Planets -
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Moon Phases and Tides learning reflection

Moon Phases, Tides -
There are 8 Moon phases and 4 main phases these phases are, new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter,  waxing gibbous, and our well known full moon and it continues but grows smaller so then the phases will be waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent and back to the start the new moon.
If you didn't know the Moon is the thing that controls the whole world's tides and things like that, something my parents said is that if it's a full Moon the tide will be higher and as the phases change the tide will become smaller also known as low tide, neap tides are tides that are about medium its not to low and it's not to high, king tides are the biggest tide of them all sometimes people have been known to get flooding in there area from king tides the last tide is spring tide it's where a tide where it happens after new moon or full moon.

Day and Night learning Reflection

Day and Night -
Here is some of the things I wrote in my day and night explanation it isn't the whole thing just some of each paragraph,
The Sun appears early hours in the morning it sounds quite easy but there's a lot of stuff that goes behind it.  The Sun is in the center of the Solar system controlling our Earth's heat, warmth, energy and most of its climates but the Sun also controls much more including our daylight and our Moon.
The Moon appears late hour in the afternoon just like the Sun but later on in the day. The Moon orbits around the Earth controlling it's tides, and darkness it may not be as much as the Sun but it is just important because it gives us darkness and cooler nights.
Our amazing planet Earth it gives us oxygen, food, water and so much more.
The Earth is always spinning and rotating around the Sun and the Moon and it orbits around the Earth giving us day and night, an example of this happening is get a ball and face one side of the ball to the Sun and cover the other side of the ball with your hand and you will see one side lit up with the sun's light and the other side darken.

Earth Learning reflection

Earth -
Earth is our beloved home and planet it is also called the goldilocks planet because the temperature is not to hot and not to cold, Earth provides us with everything we need from the air we breath to the food we eat and even the ground we step on which is something you already know well I hope you know, something I learnt from doing this as an Inquiry was that we have to do is respect the environment a lot more than what we are doing at the moment because we are getting places all over the world that are getting a lot more pollution and things like that and also just really bad and I think we should help look after the world since it's given us so many things.

Ako afternoon

Ako afternoon -
Yesterday from morning tea to home time Tamaki Primary had an ako afternoon, which is where we have to present some of our projects, videos and things we learnt throughout the term and it was very  fun but for me personally I didn't like presenting.

I was the first person in my group to have to present and I really didn't know how to feel about it whether im happy or sad, so at one point it was fun and things like that and then I didn't like it because not trying to be mean or anything I started not to like it because it started to get boring and nothing was really happening and things but I still somewhat enjoyed it and I can't really blame anyone but me because i'm not really a presenting share my learning type of person but it's fun.

My favourite part is when I got to go around the classrooms and seeing what everyone had learnt because it was very interesting and it was something I thought I wouldn't like it because it sounded a little bit boring because going around asking and answering questions doesn't sound very fun but it really was because you had to look around the whole room and really search for your answers and things like that and who knows I might just come to another one, unfortunately I couldn't come to the ako evening because I wasn't allowed and I was quite busy.

Here are some old photos of old ako evening and afternoon -

Last Day of Term 2

Today is the last day of Term 2, I can't wait for the holidays because I have no idea what we will be doing throughout the holidays something I also can't wait for is spending time with my family and i'm expecting one of my friends to come down and visit me and I can't wait to see her.

Something i'm not going to be happy about today and this week is that it's currently my best friends last day at this school and I really don't want to see her go because we are really close and I just want her to stay but life will still go on and I can't make her parents stay and things like that.

So far the day has been pretty normal and relaxing but lets see if it stays that way for the whole day and also lets see what people will be doing throughout the holidays and things like that yeaaaa.

Monita -
Nothing, shes just going to go to some roaming, and going to visit people and things like that she's also going to see her Nana and her family, friends and she said she is going to possibly be fun or boring but she will be seeing her friends throughout the holidays so I think she should have some fun.

Lizzy -
She said she is going to start her packing so she can move to her new house and she also said shes going to be moving all her stuff into the cars and trucks, she could possibly visit her family and friends that live around her new home area but she also said she doesn't know if she will like it or not.

Arizona -
She said shes going to be probably doing nothing expect visiting family member and eating lots of food because she likes food!!

Visual art Reflection

I created a visually colourful bright drawing based on myself and some of our inquiry topics
we have been doing (Sun and the Moon).

The key concept(s) I learned was that actually doing visual art on a topic can actually make
you think and focus and just relax, because colouring is actually really relaxing and it really
made me think. On the learning side doing this made me see and learn what people learnt the
most from Science and Inquiry and things like that.

A challenge I had was colouring, drawing on a very big piece of paper and choosing the
correct colour that matched. It was challenging because after a while the colouring would start
to hurt your hand, drawing isn’t my strongest thing so I had to really focus while I was drawing.
The only reason I said that colour choosing was hard because it was kind of hard because I
wanted to make sure the colours matched because I didn't want it to be all weird with colours
that didn't match, but overall I think it worked out really well.

If I did this project again something I would change is probably the colours but I think
that it also depended on the topic I was being told to draw and things like that because
say if I had to draw a tree I wouldn't colour it purple and red and say if I had to draw a lion
i'm not going to be colouring it in with blues, pinks, greens.
I think the colour scheme worked well because they were all semi bright colours and they
were just colours that I think and now know work together and I will probably use some of these
colour combinations again.
Things that went well with my drawing were the patterns and colours I used because they all just
work together really well and the way I coloured them in because I did all my colouring in
direction
throughout the colouring process and things like that and the patterns really worked together
because they were majestic, basic but eye catching as well.

Managing Self

Throughout the last week we have been staying in every morning tea, lunch and all day to finish off our work that really needs to be finished.

Our list of things we need to finish -
Visual arts
Matariki Group
Inquiry Investigation
Science Project
Feather goals

So far I have finished my Matariki, Visual art, Inquiry and Science all I have to do is finish off is my feather goal, I personally don't like staying in every single day of the week  because it makes me angry and very energetic because i've been inside for so long and I haven't been able to stretch and play and things like that.

Inquiry Investigation

So far throughout the inquiry we have just been starting to get our projects started and things like that, for my group we have all chosen to do a Cardboard display because its something that is really easy, fast, simple and usually really eye catching and things like that.

I really enjoyed this investigation because it was something that needed a lot of researching and listening and patience and overall I really enjoyed working as a group with my friends and the peers around me, something I didn't enjoy was that it did take a long time to finish and that we have to show off the projects by wednesday and its currently Monday and its not a lot of time so I have to work really really hard to finish it especially since none of my group is here to help me finish it there is only me and only me currently.

At the start of this investigation I never knew anything about black holes all I knew was that it was black and it had a hole those were the only things I knew but finishing this investigation I now know things like there is at least 100 million, strong gravitational pull, 100 - 1,000,000 times bigger than our Sun and that they can swallow and suck in dying stars.
